How to Prepare for Your Medical Assistant Externship

Medical Assistant Extern

If you’ve enrolled in the Medical Assistant program at Prism Career Institute, you’ll be required to complete a medical assistant externship prior to receiving your diploma. The externship is your chance to put your knowledge to the test and get your feet wet outside of a classroom setting.

Whether you extern at a doctor’s office, clinic, hospital, medical center, lab or medical billing and insurance company, there are a few points to keep in mind to make your externship a positive learning experience.

Dress for the Job

Be sure to start your first day dressed to impress. In other words, you should arrive wearing professional clothing that suits your workplace. Some externships may provide you with a work uniform, while others might instruct you to dress in business-casual attire. No matter where you extern, it’s important to maintain a clean, tidy and professional appearance. And if you’re ever unsure of what to wear, just ask. You’ll be glad you did.

Abide by the Rules

In addition to strictly adhering to HIPAA privacy rules, you should understand the policies of the workplace where you’re externing. Read through the policy manual to ensure you’re following their rules, and make it a point to learn emergency protocols, evacuation plans, contact numbers and other procedures in your first week.

Be Reliable

Your externship performance will likely become your best work reference when applying to jobs after graduation. Therefore, you want to ensure that you’re giving every day your all. On the first day of your externship, arrive on time. Being punctual is one of the best ways to showcase your dependability. You should also be prepared to follow instructions to a T and show a willingness to learn. If opportunities arise to go above and beyond minimum expectations, be sure to take them.
